Why Install a Dedicated EV Charger?

Plugging your electric vehicle into a standard household power point might seem like the easiest option, but it comes with real limitations. A standard 10 amp power point delivers a slow trickle charge that can take well over twenty hours to fully charge many modern EVs. It also places sustained load on a circuit that wasn’t designed to handle it, which can be a safety risk over time.

A dedicated EV charger, also known as an Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment or EVSE, is designed specifically for charging electric vehicles. It delivers a faster, safer, and more reliable charge every time, and it’s installed on its own dedicated circuit so it doesn’t affect the rest of your home’s electrical system.

For most EV owners, installing a home charger is one of the first and most practical upgrades they make after buying the vehicle.

Types of EV Chargers We Install

Level 2 Home EV Chargers

Level 2 chargers operate on a 240 volt supply and are the standard choice for residential EV charging in Australia. Depending on the charger and the vehicle, a Level 2 home charger can fully charge most EVs overnight, typically delivering between 7 and 22 kilowatts of power depending on the unit and your vehicle’s onboard charger capacity.

Commercial EV Chargers

For businesses, apartment buildings, retail centres, and commercial car parks, we install commercial grade EV charging solutions designed for higher usage and multiple simultaneous connections. Whether you need a single charger for a staff car park or a multi-bay setup for a customer-facing facility, we’ll design and install the right solution for your premises.

What's Involved in a Home EV Charger Installation

Site Assessment

We start by assessing your property, including the location of your switchboard, the available capacity on your electrical system, the distance from the switchboard to the proposed charger location, and the best mounting position for the unit.

Switchboard Assessment

A dedicated EV charger requires its own circuit and circuit breaker back at the switchboard. We assess whether your existing switchboard has the capacity to accommodate the new circuit or whether an upgrade is required before installation can proceed. We’ll let you know upfront if a switchboard upgrade is needed and what it will cost.

Charger Selection & Installation

We’ll help you choose the right charger for your vehicle, your parking setup, and your budget. Key considerations include the power output of the charger, compatibility with your vehicle, smart charging features, and whether you want the unit to integrate with a solar system if you have one.

Testing and Handover

We test the charger and confirm it’s communicating correctly with your vehicle before we leave. We walk you through the operation of the unit and any smart charging features it includes.

Commercial EV Charger Installation

Commercial EV charger installation is suited to a wide range of businesses and property types across Melbourne,  including:

  • Office buildings and business parks
  • Retail centres and hospitality venues
  • Apartment buildings and strata properties
  • Hotels and accommodation providers
  • Fleet operators and logistics businesses
  • Car parks and parking stations
  • Councils and government facilities

What We Do

We assess your premises, design a charging solution that suits your current needs and allows for future expansion, manage all electrical work including switchboard upgrades and three-phase connections where required, and install commercial grade charging equipment built for high-usage environments.

We work with property owners, facilities managers, and strata committees to deliver commercial EV charging solutions that are practical, well-designed, and built to last.

Maximising Your EV Setup

Do You Need a Switchboard Upgrade?

One of the most common questions we get asked about EV charger installation is whether the existing switchboard can handle it. The answer depends on the current capacity of the board, how many circuits are already in use, and the output of the charger being installed.

In many cases the existing switchboard has plenty of capacity and no upgrade is required. In others, particularly in older Melbourne homes, an upgrade is needed before a dedicated EV circuit can be safely installed. We assess this during the site inspection and give you a clear picture of what’s involved and what it will cost before you commit to anything.

Solar and EV Charging

If your home has a solar system, integrating your EV charger with your solar setup can significantly reduce the cost of charging your vehicle. Smart EV chargers can be configured to prioritise solar export for vehicle charging during daylight hours, meaning you’re charging the car from power your panels are already generating rather than drawing from the grid.

We can advise on the best approach to solar-integrated EV charging during your consultation and recommend chargers that support this functionality if it’s something you’re interested in.

GOT QUESTIONS?

Frequently Asked Questions — EV Charger Installation

What is the difference between a Level 1 and Level 2 EV charger?

Level 1 charging uses a standard 10 amp power point and delivers a slow trickle charge, typically adding between 8 and 15 kilometres of range per hour. Level 2 charging uses a dedicated 240 volt circuit and delivers a much faster charge, typically adding between 30 and 100 kilometres of range per hour depending on the charger and the vehicle. For most EV owners, a Level 2 home charger is the practical choice.

How long does it take to charge an EV with a home charger?

It depends on the capacity of the charger, the capacity of your vehicle’s battery, and how depleted it is when you plug in. Most modern EVs can be fully charged from empty overnight with a standard Level 2 home charger. We’ll give you a realistic expectation based on your specific vehicle during the consultation.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade to install an EV charger?

Not always. It depends on the current capacity of your switchboard and how many circuits are already in use. We assess this during the site inspection and let you know upfront whether an upgrade is required.

Can I install an EV charger if I rent my home?

You’ll need permission from your landlord to install a hardwired EV charger. Some landlords are open to it, particularly as EV ownership becomes more common. We’re happy to provide a quote you can share with your landlord to support the conversation.

Can an EV charger work with my solar system?

Yes. Smart EV chargers can be configured to prioritise solar generation for vehicle charging, reducing or eliminating the cost of charging from the grid. We can advise on the best approach during your consultation.

How long does an EV charger installation take?

Most residential EV charger installations take between two and four hours depending on the distance from the switchboard to the charger location and whether any switchboard work is required. We’ll confirm the timeframe when we quote.

Is an EV charger installation eligible for any rebates or incentives?

Victorian and federal government incentives for EVs and EV infrastructure change regularly. We recommend checking the current offerings through the Victorian Government and the Australian Government Clean Energy Finance Corporation websites for the most up to date information at the time of your installation.
